Sen. Joyce Elliott of Little Rock put a hold yesterday on the budget of the state Heritage Department because of questions about the fate of the historic building next door to the state's Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, a museum of the black experience Arkansas.

We wrote about the situation earlier. The 2015 legislature appropriated $1 million to purchase the building, but funding wasn't budgeted and the agency hasn't funded operating costs. When last we checked, the governor's office said the matter was still under review.

The owner of the building has it up for sale. Elliott said: "We need to secure the building from being sold."

The building was built in 1921 as the Mosaic State Temple. It is an original and next door to the current museum, which is in a building reconstructed after a fire to resemble the original building.
