The proposal was deferred today because of what City Attorney Tom Carpenter
called unresolved legal questions. He'd earlier issued an opinion that said the proposed project complies with city rules. Some members of the commission disagree with the opinion, including a commissioner, Jennifer Carman, who owns property close by and who's continued to express her opposition to other commission members, though she's recused from voting. Should she be allowed to participate in this manner?
Historic preservation inspires strong emotions. So does downtown development in a city suddenly seeing a bit. The D-G article describes in depth changes in the size and scope of the project to meet concerns that it blend with nearby houses.
Much more to come on this. Maybe even more than the fight on the height of the wrought iron fence at 14th and Scott. But a good bit more is at stake.
