Former Saline sheriff Bruce Pennington plea bargains state case

Bruce Pennington, already sentenced to a year on a federal charge, entered a plea bargain in Saline Circuit Court today to state charges of abuse of public trust and theft while Saline sheriff.

He received concurrent eight-month sentences from Circuit Judge Gary Arnold, after credit for 64 days already served. It may be be served in a state community correction center and it will be served concurrent with his federal sentence. He was also ordered to make restitution of $2,614 on the theft of property charge. Pennington, 65, was charged with dropping a speeding charge against a man who installed granite countertops in his home and with taking money for personal use from the sheriff's office. He'll have 60 months of supervised release after the sentence.

In the federal wire fraud charge, Pennington admitted taking campaign funds and using it for personal expenses, including alcohol.
