I've been a candidate, worked for a governor, counted Florida chads, and worked for a president. I voted in nine presidential elections. Always as a Republican.
The state GOP "establishment," including those in elected office, seems to be gravitating around one candidate in the presidential race. But I am going in a different direction. In the March 1 primary, I am supporting Donald Trump for president. For me, it's pretty simple.
GOP ranks are filled with Limbaugh listeners, conservative white-paper memorizers, and Charles Krauthammer and Thomas Sowell devotees. Many do an awesome job of articulating the nobility of conservatism (and make no mistake, conservatism is noble).
But most Americans are tired of talk. They don't understand why someone won't lead. They want someone to take risks. Donald Trump is the proven leader. The proven motivator. The person willing to take the fight to those people who oppose us, and willing to attack issues that chronically confound us.
Like Gen. George Patton, Mr. Trump sometimes gets off script. He departs from the party line. General Patton frustrated the politicians, but was a leader. He rallied his people, ignored skeptics, and attained goals others thought unattainable.
