Donald Trump announced today that he has hired Sarah Huckabee Sanders as a senior adviser.

Sanders, daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, previously worked on her father's campaign.

Sanders said in a statement:

I volunteered to join Mr. Trump’s campaign because he is a champion of working families; not Washington-Wall Street elites. Like the other Republican candidates, Mr. Trump is pro-life, pro-marriage, and will appoint conservatives to the courts. What makes Mr. Trump my choice for president is he will break the grip of the donor class on our government and make it accountable to working families again. I’m honored to help Mr. Trump Make America Great Again.

Trump said, "I have great respect for Gov. Mike Huckabee and we have a mutual admiration for our wonderful families. It is great to have his daughter, Sarah, join the campaign."

You can see in Sanders' statement that there is some overlap here — while Huckabee is heavily focused on Christian Right politics, he was also heterodox on economic issues, pushing a populist message that, like Trump, made him a target for the Club for Growth, the GOP's plutocrat protection program. Meanwhile, you can also see that this hire was maybe a wee bit motivated by Sanders' maiden name — an association with Huckabee helps Trump with evangelical voters.

Once upon a time, rumors circulated that Huckabee himself might endorse Trump. Wouldn't put it past him!
