The governor offers context
here (and says the word "freebie" in the headline is misleading).
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson
and his wife accepted more than $73,000 in travel costs last year, the AP reports
, covering twenty-one trips the governor and/or first lady Susan Hutchinson
took that were paid for by outside groups. The governor disclosed the gifts, as required by law, yesterday. Here is his
full disclosure form.
The state's Economic Development Foundation paid more than $40,000 "trade missions" to Europe and Asia.
The Arkansas Republican Party also paid more than $20,000 for the governor's trips, including a trade mission to Cuba and a speech at the Charles Koch Institute Advancing Justice.
Other groups paying for the governor's missions, jaunts, and junkets: the Republican Governors Association, the Border Patrol Foundation, Alliance Defending Freedom (a Christian Right group), the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, and the Charles Koch Institute.
On Hutchinson's predecessor, the AP report notes
: "[F]ormer Gov. Mike Beebe, reported he and his wife received more than $36,000 in travel and airfare during his final year in office in 2014. The bulk of the travel expenses were paid for by the state Economic Development Foundation for a trade mission to Europe."
