Remember how the March 1 "SEC primary" was going to be a showcase for a certain Southern candidate for the Republican presidential nomination?

Gov. Asa Hutchinson pushed the legislature to move up the Arkansas primaries from May to March 1 so that we could share in the glory of a mass Southern march to victory by his favorite son candidate, former Gov. Mike Huckabee. (He decamped from Arkansas to a beach mansion in income tax-free Florida not long after leaving office.)

Huckabee's campaign is running on empty. And who's in the lead? A New Yorker who, at various times, has declared himself pro-choice and pro-single-payer health insurance. For good measure, he also said the Iraq war was a mistake.

No recent polling in Arkansas is available, but I wouldn't be surprised if it would mirror this just in from Alabama:

A poll conducted by Alabama Senate and House Republicans in mid-December showed Trump in the lead with 35 percent and Sen. Ted Cruz next with 15 percent. Then came Sen. Marco Rubio and Ben Carson with 12 each. Everybody else was in single digits. Mike Huckabee, who won the Alabama primary in 2008, tied for fifth place with Jeb Bush at 4 percent.
