U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton told Politico he'd like to see former Vice President Dick Cheney as House speaker

"Look, these are trying times for our nation. It’s important to have a steady hand on the helm during times like this. I think experience really counts in a matter like this. I think House leadership experience really matters," Cotton said, according to Politico's congressional newsletter Huddle. "And as you know the speaker doesn’t have to be a member of the House: So therefore, Vice President Cheney for speaker.”

Even Politico, friendly to wingnuts, said it "pressed" Cotton on whether he was serious.

“He’s a man of the House, he says that himself,” Cotton said.

I don't doubt that Cotton is serious. Which is exactly the problem.

PS — When I saw the headline on Twitter that a freshman senator was endorsing Cheney for House speaker I didn't even bother to look at the link. Must be some real wackjob, I thought. Then a fellow Arkie sent it by e-mail. Politico, by the way, in one version of its report identified Cotton as being from "AK." If only.

It's times like these that we really need Jon Stewart.
