WREG in Memphis reports
that the Crittenden County Circuit Court has ordered the national NAACP to pay its Crittenden County chapter $100,000 in damages and $20,000 in attorney fees after a protracted legal battle that arose from organizational elections that the local chapter claims was rigged.
Local chapter president Shabaka Afrika
claims the state NAACP president, Dale Charles
, intervened in the local chapter's elections, then turned to the national organization when the Crittenden County NAACP attempted to push back in 2010. The national NAACP then tried to revoke the local chapter's membership, Afrika said.
