BENTONVILLE, Ark. —Walmart says it will no longer sell AR-15's or similar rifles.
Walmart corporate spokesman Kory Lundberg confirmed to 40/29 that sales of modern sporting rifles (MSR's), a class that includes AR-15's, have ended at all Walmart locations.
Lundberg cited consumer demand, saying that Walmart's customers are more interested in rifles for hunting and that Walmart will replace the military-style weapons with hunting rifles and shotguns when stores restock for the fall. He says the decision was made in the spring.
AR-15's are among the most popular guns in America, but they have been controversial for their use in shootings, including the Sandy Hook shooting that killed 26 people.
About one-third of Walmart's stores sold AR-15's.
