Earlier today, I mentioned Mike Huckabee
's appearance on CNN's "State of the Union," but missed seeing the appearance and relied on reported accounts. Well, there's more (video of Huck's appearance on the program
is now available): Huckabee was asked about the case of a 10-year-old girl, raped by her stepfather, forced to carry the pregnancy to term by the government of her native Paraguay.
"Let nobody be misled, a 10-year-old girl being raped is horrible, but does it solve a problem by taking the life of an innocent child?" Huckabee responded. "And that's really the issue."
"Let's not compound the tragedy by taking yet another life," he added.
IN ADDITION: If you were in Arkansas in 1996, Huckabee's position comes as no surprise. That year, Huckabee blocked Medicaid from funding an abortion for a 15-year-old mentally-challenged child who was raped by her stepfather (our stories from that time are not online; read the NY Times about it if you need a refresher.)
He broke federal law in doing so — just like our current governor has done in blocking federal funds to Planned Parenthood f
or family planning. I don't recall Huckabee offering to raise the child of the retarded girl. So that she could get the abortion before it was too late, private donors stepped up. Today, Huckabee and all the other nutjobs in the GOP would stand in the doctor's door, including Bro. Rapert, who would instruct the woman that she just did not know better.
(I presume Huckabee would have made the same move against a retarded 10-year-old Arkansan, demanding that her child's body carry to term and deliver.)
