After a morning of conflicting news accounts, a spokesman for the city of Chattanooga has now given what appears to be a firm report on the toll of shootings this morning at a military recruiting office and a reserve center in the Tennessee city — three dead, including the shooter, and three wounded, including a police officer.

CNN reports.

A recruiting office was sprayed by gunfire initially, then someone opened fire on a Navy reserve center, where the casualties apparently occurred. As yet, no word on motive or identity of the shooter.

One witness told reporters of a man in a Mustang convertible firing a rifle at the centers.

The incident naturally recalls the 2009 military recruiting center shooting in Little Rock that left one dead and one wounded, a terrorist attack inspired by shooter's professed intent to oppose U.S. intervention in the Middle East.

UPDATE: Subsequent reporting puts the death toll at four Marines and the shooter, CNN says.Police reponse led to the shooting of the assailant, officials said at a news conference. One police officer was wounded. City officials are calling the shootings an act of "domestic terrorism." The FBI is in charge of the investigation.

UPDATE II: AP, quoting a U.S. official, says the gunman has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazee, 24. He's believed to have been born in Kuwait and lived .near Chattanooga in Hixson, Tenn.
