Report: Walmart planning 1,000 management job cuts

Kim Souza of The City Wire reports, citing unnamed sources, that Walmart plans to cut up to 1,000 corporate headquarters jobs by Nov. 1, perhaps including up to 200 vice presidents. Some of the cuts will be through attrition.

It's said to be part of a push to move focus to the stores — where comparable store sales have been dull, in part because of competition, particularly on-line. There are no cash registers at company headquarters in Bentonville, CEO Doug McMillon has said. Other national retailers are also cutting jobs.

According to an economist quoted in the article, the job cut would be about 5 percent of the Bentonville HQ workforce.
