Fayetteville rights campaign begins

For Fayetteville, the group organized to campaign for a city civil rights ordinance, will have a campaign opening event at 2 p.m. Sunday at 16 W. Center on the Fayetteville square.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan, Council members Adella Gray and Matthew Petty and state Rep. Greg Leding will speak. Food, drink and music will be provided. T-shirts and bumper stickers will be for sale and yard signs and other material will be distributed.

A special election is set Sept. 8 on the ordinance, a streamlined version of an ordinance repealed by voters. It provides a means to complain about discrimination in employment, housing and public services on a variety of grounds, including sexual orientation and gender identity, the flash point issues.
