  • LIVE BY THE FULL QUIVER…...: Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar rose to fame with their fecund ways. Now comes the fallout as the family copes with sexual molestation allegations in their home.

Jim Bob Duggar's
family has made a sizable living as stars of a reality TV show "19 Kids and Counting" based on the size and extreme religious orientation of the family. So now has come the downside in the aftermath of reporting about sexual molestation within the Duggar home.

The fallout includes:

* From People magazine, a look at the controversial "therapy" provided for Josh Duggar by an outfit once run in Little Rock by Bill Gothard, yet another putative Christian figure who fell from grace in his own sex scandal. Among others, the routine urges families to look for "temptation" in the home and to look for the teaching that could have been given to each child to resist evil. Each child, presumably including victims. As Gawker notes:

The lessons are frighteningly light on personal responsibility, and heavy on blame for the victim—condemning younger sisters for dressing “immodestly,” and parents for exposing the boy to temptation by having him change his sisters’ diapers. The document also blames porn, advising families to “pray for protection from pornography.”

*From the Daily Mail, an account of the incest joke once made on the TLC TV show by Josh Duggar. Emphasis supplied below:

The 27-year-old talks about going on a date with his then-fiancee Anna during the show, then called 17 Kids and Counting.

As all Duggars require chaperons for dates, his siblings, twins Jana and John David tagged along to the movie.

'We chose Jana and John David. We thought, "Why not have a double date?" We are from Arkansas!' Josh said while laughing in the clip, which aired in October 2008.

* From Raw Story, a report on a defense of the Duggars from the wife of a pastor who's a part of the "Quiverfull" movement to procreate as much as possible. The  Duggars are in the Quiverfull flock. Wrote Carrie Hurd, wife of pastor Patrick Hurd:

“Vyckie, this is actually Pat’s wife, Carrie. You women want parity in the board room and you want equal wages all the way up the ladder, but when it comes to taking responsibility and being equal in other areas, it is always the man’s fault or responsibility. How many women bait, hit first, but are seldom arrested for abuse………….?” she wrote.

She then compared the then-14-year-old Duggar’s actions to children “playing doctor.”

“When I was a kid, it was often called ‘playing doctor’, there were just as many girls initiating this kind of behavior as boys. Most of those never went on to perp horrible things, ” she explained. “The Duggers, who I have never watched–am not a fan, did it properly and the 14 year old boy should probably be left alone to live a good life, just like girls who do the same thing.”

* Here and abroad, press accounts are noting the coincidence of political connections between Duggar ally Mike Huckabee and the judge, Stacey Zimmerman, who ordered destruction of the police report that revealed the previously unreported allegations of molestation in the Duggar home. Huckabee, a presidential candidate, has been among the few standing up for the Duggars and blaming the media for writing about the story.

The attention is worldwide. It is hard to see TLC bringing the Duggars back in the face of all this. On the other hand, the numbers might even be higher.
