Multiple sources are reporting that a reserve deputy for the Johnson County Sheriff's Office was killed in the line of duty overnight.

Johnson County Judge Herman Houston said the deputy, whose name has not been released yet, was responding to a call about a burglary in the eastern portion of the county when he was shot and killed. A suspect is in custody. We'll have more information here as it emerges.

UPDATE: Arkansas State Police have identified the officer killed as Reserve Deputy Sonny Smith, 42, of Clarksville. He was an eleven year veteran of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

ASP says that Smith and other deputies were searching for a burglary suspect around 2:30 this morning at a location fifteen miles east of Clarksville. Police say that during that search, Smith confronted a man named Fred Albert Kauffeld, 51, of Clarksville, who allegedly shot Smith. Police say Smith returned fire, slightly injuring Kauffeld. Smith was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Kauffeld is currently in custody at the Pope County Detention Center. The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.
