Sen. Cecile Bledsoe, R-Rogers, is chair of the Senate's Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee. Her son, Dr. Gregory Bledsoe, is state surgeon general and chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Medicaid Reform.

Now comes Cecile Bledsoe's husband, Dr. James H. Bledsoe, who the state Health Department wants to hire as a consultant to its Emergency Medical Services Section. The Arkansas Legislative Council on Friday is to take up the Health Department's request for ALC's approval of the hiring, necessary since's Bledsoe is the spouse of a legislator. The ALC meeting begins at 9 a.m. in Room A of Big Mac.

Bledsoe, a locum tenens surgeon in practice for 46 years, will be paid around $85,000 for the half-time job, Robert Brech, CFO of the Health Department, said. Brech said the position had gone unfilled for some time and that the department was "excited" to get someone of Bledsoe's qualifications.

A correspondent asks, "What's up with that?" Only a Bledsoe can handle health issues for Arkansas? I don't have an answer.
