When officers arrived, the suspect fled into his home and officers were unable to enter, the news release stated.
Around 11:40 p.m. the suspect emerged from the home and one of the officers confronted him. Police said the man fled into his home again but the officer pursued him.
According to JPD, the suspect tried to shut the door on that officer and as the officer pushed open the door, the man struck the officer on his arm with a machete.
The officer then drew his weapon, firing several times at the suspect according to the news release. However, the officer did not know if the suspect had been struck by the gunfire so he was still considered armed and dangerous JPD stated.
A tactical team with Jonesboro police was notified and made entry into the home around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police said the suspect appeared to be lifeless.
Craighead County Coroner Toby Emerson pronounced the man dead at the scene.
