The American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC,
the Koch-backed political lobby that now guides the major policy decisions of Arkansas and other Republican-dominated legislatures, doesn't take kindly to criticism.
It has sent a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action if Common Cause, the good government group, doesn't stop talking about ALEC's role in the climate change denia
l industry. (That industry helps perpetuate the profits of the carbon burners like the Kochs and coal barons.)
“ALEC’s demands and legal threats are an effort to shut down debate about its policies and matters of national importance. They seek to chill our right to advocate for the public interest,” said Miles Rapoport, President of Common Cause. “It won’t work.”
ALEC claims it doesn't deny climate change, but Common Cause notes that it quotes selectively from 1998 model legislation on the subject.
Words and deeds. Check the list of legislators who attend ALEC conferences. Watch them vote on pipelines, carbon emission rules, fracking and the like. Major themes emerge.
