The Arkansas Opportunity to Learn Campaign, PTA
groups and many others will have a rally at 6 p.m. tonight at the Capitol to build opposition to HB1733, the school privatization bill.
The bill allows closure of local schools, dissolution of school boards and transfer of local property tax dollars and locally built facilities to control of private corporations that don't have to hire qualified teachers or meet other standards that apply to conventional public schools.
It is, as the campaign says, taxation without representation. Dare I say it? Take a teabag.
The bill could come to a festering head Thursday in the House Education Committee. Concurrent action in circuit court on a lawsuit over the state Board of Education vote that put Little Rock in the bullseye of HB 1733 could change circumstances a bit.
