I said it at the time, but the case of Jermain Taylor illustrates graphically why the Arkansas legislature was wrong to make the list of concealed carry handgun permits secret.

Accountability.

A list I obtained before the records were sealed indicates Taylor is a concealed carry permittee. He's charged with shooting a cousin and, this week, threatening a family and firing shots in the air and near the head of a man. He's thrown a brick through a car window and had other violent episodes, outside the ring.

As far as can be told when the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette checked yesterday, Taylor apparently still was a permit holder in good standing.

When permittees abuse weapons, public demands for accountability of police agencies are more readily possible when they are known. But for the recent lists remaining from the days when they were public, the Democrat-Gazette would have been unable to point out that Taylor is certified to carry a concealed weapon.

And we are all safer for it, right?
