  • JERMAIN TAYLOR: In encounter with police today.

This from the LRPD:

Around 2 PM Jermain Taylor was taken to the downtown detective offices and interviewed for discharging a firearm. The details surrounding this event are unclear and investigators are sorting out the information by interviewing victims and witnesses. Once details become available they will be released.

Taylor, the prize fighter, is facing trial in June on a battery charge for shooting his cousin. Police were later called to his house in December after he reportedly threw a brick threw the window of someone's car. Today's encounter began near Wright Avenue and Wolfe Street, the Democrat-Gazette reported.

The LRPD added:

The incident occurred at Wright Ave and Wolfe and the traffic stop occurred at Wright Ave and MLK. A weapon was recovered and interviews are still being conducted. No charges have been made at this time

KATV's Matt Mershon is reporting that Taylor left the police 12th St. substation in an ambulance after complaining of unspecified injuries. Brittney Johnson of KARK said later, quoting Taylor's trainer, that he'd been injured in training for a future fight, a cracked rib.

UPDATE: Here's the latest from Lt. Sidney Allen:

Taylor has not been transported to the jail, but he will be charged with 5 counts of aggravated assault, 3 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and possession of marijuana.

PEACEMAKER VIDEO: Channel 4 has video of Taylor strutting not long before the shooting at the gathering for the MLK parade at the Capitol.

ALSO: A police report issued in early evening said officers responding to a report of gunshots and Wright and Wolfe talked with Thelton Smith, who was with his wife and three children, aged  1, 3 and 5. Smith said Taylor fired at him. The police report said they took a pistol, unfired rounds and shell casings at the scene.

The police incident report.
According to Channel 4, Taylor flipped out during what had been a friendly encounter with the Smith family after a child dropped one of his championship belts. He then fired several shots, two in the air and one close to Smith's head.
