Arkansas State University announced today that Xavier Woodson, a linebacker, would not play in the first half of ASU's game with USC next fall because of the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that caused his ejection from the Go Daddy Bowl game against Toledo.

ASU didn't go into details, but Woodson was said to have  threatened an official. The ASU coach wouldn't reveal what Woodson had said.

The ASU statement on the matter:

JONESBORO, Ark. (1/9/15) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir and Head Football Coach Blake Anderson issued a joint statement Friday announcing linebacker Xavier Woodson has been suspended for the first half of A-State’s 2015 road game at USC due to a violation of team conduct regulations.

Woodson, who completed his sophomore season in 2014, was ejected by the officiating crew during the second half of A-State’s GoDaddy Bowl game against Toledo for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The disciplinary action imposed is a joint A-State athletics department and football program decision and not mandated by the Sun Belt Conference, although it has been communicated with and agreed upon by the league office.

“We expect a high standard of conduct from everyone associated with our program, and Xavier’s conduct that resulted in his ejection from the bowl game was not in line with that standard,” said Anderson. “He let his emotions get the best of him, but he understands his comments were unacceptable regardless of that. I’m confident Xavier will use this as a learning experience and, as a result, grow as a player.”

Arkansas State opens its 2015 season Sept. 5 at USC.
