  • EVEN THE BEST OF FAMILIES: The Duggar clan, outspoken about homosexuality, find themselves with a lesbian relative.

Lots of traffic on the Internet
about the fact that Michelle Duggar of reality TV fame has a lesbian sister.

The Duggars, after all, have been at the forefront of anti-gay efforts in Arkansas. They provided  money and taped messages to defeat a civil rights ordinance that extended protection to gay people in Fayetteville. One of the many Duggar spawn, Josh, is a spokesman for the anti-gay Family Council, identified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Young Duggar has been quoted as saying he loves his aunt, who lives with a partner in Ohio, and is sure she opposes same-sex marriage. Auntie's partner has been quoted as having some reservations about the Duggar beliefs, however.

The larger point: The Duggars are the exception that proves the rule. American attitudes are changing at a rapid clip for a simple reason. Gay people are stepping out of the shadows. The more they do so, the more likely their friends, family and business associates are to support equal treatment under the law. Among young people, acceptance is the attitude of an overwhelming majority, the numerous and rapidly multiplying Duggars notwithstanding.
