LR City Board likely to defer Uber ordinance

The Little Rock City Board agenda for Monday (a day early because of the election) includes \the ordinance that would allow permits for ride-sharing services such as Uber in the city with rules similar, but not identical, to those applied to the taxi franchise.

However, the staff has recommended deferral of the item Monday. The Board procedurally most vote on a deferral or else the ordinance is up for consideration because the ordinance was discussed at the Oct. 28 agenda meeting.

The city staff has recommended approval of the ordinance, shown here in its most recent form.

The so-called transportation network companies such as Uber — which uses a mobile app to dispatch drivers — will be exempt from having a business office in the city, but they must maintain an office reachable digitally 24 hours a day. The insurance requirements — a source of contention around the country — are detailed but differ from those applying to taxis. I note that you cannot hail an Uber-type car.
