Sauce for the lawyer-bashing geese of the GOP; what about Asa?

Michael Cook, political consultant for Democrat Clarke Tucker in his race for House District 35 against Republican Stacy Hurst, makes an excellent point.

Republicans think it is fair game to slime Tucker for taking a single pro bono criminal case. Hurst is doing this reprehensibly in bogus push polling phone calls. They go something like this: Who are you voting for in District 35? Clarke Tucker? Would it change your mind if you knew he thought serial killers should roam the streets?

So, suggests Cook, should Republicans now slime gubernatorial nominee Asa Hutchinson for providing a criminal defense for convicted financial megafraudster Brandon Barber? They won't of course. Brandon Barber is a nice looking young white man from a good family. Tucker, in the name of charity, represented a relative of someone his mother was helping. That defendant's photo works a lot better than Barber's in Willie Horton-style mail advertising, if you get my drift.

By the way: There have been some who've attempted to raise an eyebrow at Hutchinson's representation of Barber. Not me. Barber has a constitutional right to a lawyer, too — an expensive one like Hutchinson if he can afford it. Thanks to good counsel on cooperating with authorities, Barber may have only a couple of more years in prison to serve for a giant swindle.
