Class action claim made over modified corn

Trouble in the fields. A class action lawsuit has been filed in Lonoke County against a maker of a genetically engineered corn seed. It's been approved and used in the U.S., but not in China. The failure of China to allow imports that include this corn depressed prices, the suit said, and caused losses for farmers.

The suit was filed in behalf of three farming operations against the Syngenta Corporation and two subsidiaries. Lead counsel is Thomas Thrash of Little Rock. The lawsuit claims Syngenta misrepresented expected approval of the corn by China.

Facts differ, but the suit calls to mind the enormous judgment in a case over genetically modified rice that contaminated the Arkansas rice crop. It also was a Lonoke County case.
