UCA student James Thweatt is leading a protest group that plans to demonstrate at a Jason Rapert
campaign event at 7 p.m. tonight at the Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA.
The anti-gay Family Research Council
is part of the "Stand Up for America" event, which will include Ricky Skaggs and Barbara Fairchild. Thweatt and others object to the public campus being used by a hate group, as the Council has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The university said it rents the Reynolds hall to political groups of all persuasions, noting that Democrats rented it recently. Rapert has signed a contract to pay $1,780 to use the hall.
Thweatt said 50 people had signed up on Facebook to gather at the event tonight. Rapert is running for re-election to the state Senate against
Democrat Tyler Pearson.
