ROBBERY TARGET: Arby's on Chenal Parkway.
The Little Rock police say two juveniles robbed the Arby's at 15501 Chenal Parkway about 12:30 a.m. this morning after holding employees for almost two hours and sexually assaulting one employee. One suspect was seriously injured in a crash during their getaway. He's hospitalized and another suspect was taken into custody later.
According to a release, the robbers held three victims in the store for more than two hours before fleeing in a vehicle that crashed head-on with another vehicle in the 13000 block of Chenal Parkway. The getaway car apparently passed officers responding to the robbery report. The car in the wreck was driven by a 58-year-old man who had to be freed from the wreck by emergency workers.
One 17-year-old suspect in the car was taken into custody at the scene and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Despite his injuries, he struggled with officers and tried to bite them as they handcuffed him, the report said. The driver fled on foot, but was taken into custody after seeking medical treatment about 7:15 a.m. Police said the driver will be charged with four counts of robbery, three of theft, three of kidnapping, fleeing and hit and run. No charges have been determined yet against the hospitalized suspect.
The police account of the robbery said employees were leaving when robbers with guns forced them back inside. They made repeated efforts to get employees to open a safe, but they were unable to do so. One suspect forced a 35-year-old female employee into a restroom and attempted to force sexual intercourse, but was unable to do so as she protested. He also attempted to make her perform oral sex. She said he touched but didn't penetrate her.
The robbers forced one employee to attempt to open the safe with tools, but he was unsuccessful. In the course of the unsuccessful attempts, one of the robbers fired shots at him on two occasions — once near his head while he was kneeling inside and once outside the building. He wasn't struck, but fragments of debris flew. They finally left after ordering the employees to lie on the floor and escaped after taking keys to one of the employee's car.
