Overnight, the news worsened
in Ferguson, Mo., with the call of the National Guard to peacekeeping duty.

Acts of violence prompted the decision.

There is no justification for violence. But there is also no justification for abridgment of constitutional rights, such as those of speech and assembly.  What if ….. curfew and refusal to allow protest were accompanied by rules to confiscate weapons.

Before the governor made his move on the Guard:

Earlier Sunday, well before the unrest of the night, civil rights organizations called on Governor Nixon to rescind the state of emergency and the curfew in Ferguson.

The American Civil Liberties Union, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense Fund said in a statement that the governor’s action “suspends the constitutional right to assemble by punishing the misdeeds of the few through the theft of constitutionally protected rights of the many.”

“We need more protest, expression, discussion and debate — not less,” the statement said.

The independent autopsy report indicating the unarmed Michael Brown was shot six times, albeit in the front, isn't likely to soothe matters any. Nor will videos of the likes posted by Talking Points Memo of cops telling reporters to "get the fuck out of here." And more reporters being detained. What part of the 1st Amendment don't cops in Ferguson not understand?
