ELECTED JUDGE: Mike Maggio did himself in with remarks on the Tiger Droppings website, not voters. He was headed unopposed to a higher court until scandal developed.

A remark by lame-duck Attorney General Dustin McDaniel on his belief that judges should be appointed rather than elected prompted articles on the issue today in both the Democrat-Gazette and at Stephens Media.

To recap the long-standing view here, much of it reflected by various people in the two articles:

1) Appointment is preferable to election.

2) Appointment doesn't remove judges from politics.

3) Appointment ain't going to happen in Arkansas. Stephens Media, quoting former Supreme Court Justice Annabelle Imber Tuck:

But I’m very practical. I don’t think the people of the state of Arkansas are going to give up their right to vote.

4) Secretly supplied money will play an increasing role in judicial politics.

5) More often than not, corporate money will prevail.

6) Every now and then a thoroughly disreputable judge will do him/herself in (Tiger Droppings, anyone?). Voters too often are none the wiser to such scoundrels.
