We’ve made a hobby of collecting the bigoted, ignorant, insensitive and pig-stupid things that Mike Huckabee has said in public over the years, so I think we’re fairly qualified to say: The Huckster reached a new low today. Never has he said anything more colossally offensive than today, when at a speech at the March for Marriage rally in Washington, he quoted extensively from portions of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail on the difference between “just” and “unjust” laws. Raw Story has the video above and a transcript:
“We can never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was ‘illegal.’ It was ‘illegal’ to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. But I am sure that if I had lived in Germany during that time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers even though it was illegal.”
…
“I wish I had penned those words,” Huckabee exclaimed. “But they were penned by someone who understood freedom, and understood that there was a time to stand up against law when it has become unjust. Those are the words that were penned by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1954 in his letter from the Birmingham Jail.”
“I wish he were here today to say in the people in the building behind this one, Mr. Supreme Court justices, Madam Supreme Court justices, your role is only to interpret the law, to make sure that it somehow meshes with the Constitution, not that it messes with the Constitution!” he shouted.
Coretta Scott King, of course, was a long advocate for LGBT rights, who believed that the fight was an extension of her husband’s work.
Watch the video above to hear Huckabee’s profound lack of understanding of the separation of powers and him decry Circuit Judge Chris Piazza. But you’ll have to go here to hear him pronounce the final “t” in “coup d’état.”
