Briefing schedule set in Voter ID case

The record of the trial of the challenge of the Voter ID law was filed at the Arkansas Supreme Court last week and a briefing schedule was set.

The secretary of state is appealing Judge Tim Fox's order finding the law a new burden to voters not allowed by the state Constitution.

The appellants' brief is due July 7. The appellees' brief will be due 30 days after that. A reply brief is due 15 days after that. So the record should be complete by late August.

For now, the law is in effect because Fox stayed his ruling. But the plaintiffs are considering asking the judge to enjoin the law. The Supreme Court has already indicated in a related case that the law is flawed by disparate treatment of in-person and absentee voters. Primary elections were marred by inconsistent application of the law at polling places and hundreds of disqualified ballots.
