The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette today published a remarkable 2,897-word essay by Sen. Jason Rapert of Conway. I have this to say about that:

Publisher Hussman, tear down that (pay) wall!

The world needs to read Rapert Unbound (and unhinged) And not just because I'm proud to be listed among Rapert's liberal villains — from the  the baby killers to the "radical homosexual lobby" to the lying writers.  He suggests his enemies wish for nothing less than the death of Rapert and his family.

He was given so much acreage, I guess, because the newspaper once had suggested he favored impeachment of Judge Chris Piazza for his marriage equality ruling. Rapert takes great umbrage at this "error," though the record shows it's a distinction without much difference.

Rapert commented kindly to a Fort Smith publication about interest in impeachment from House members. He voiced no disapproval. He later drew up a legislative resolution that calls for a legislative solution to judges like Chris Piazza. He wants  a constitutional amendment allowing voter recall of judges.

As I've said before, this is even WORSE than impeachment, in which a full-blown trial would be required and presumably some showing of fact justifying removal. We'd hope a judge upholding two constitutions wouldn't constitute a high crime in the eyes of Arkansas legislators. But no matter. Recall would make the judicial process subject to popular whim. It's a terrible idea and one reason federal judges were wisely given life tenure by the founding fathers Rapert loves to selectively quote. Without judges who bravely interpreted the constitution (or, as Rapert puts it, overruled the will of the people), segregation would likely remain the law of Arkansas and people with different skin color would be prohibited from marrying.

Note: If you live in Rapert's district, a calm and rational young man named Tyler Pearson is opposing Rapert in November.
