ExxonMobil, whose pipeline showed heavy crude on Mayflower and which has more recently been criticized by Gov. Mike Beebe for the nature of its response to another disaster in the area is going to showcase its contribution to tornado relief at a press event this afternoon.
Earlier, it was reported that Exxon had decided to give $250,000, split between the Red Cross and the Arkansas Community Foundation, a community-based charity that distributes philanthropic aid. Beebe had complained that he’d suggested the company give aid to Mayflower and Vilonia directly to keep public services going while the cities were rebuilding without their normal sales tax base on account of demolished businesses. He said Exxon had ignored him and he was disappointed by it. Exxon said it also had supplied water and fuel and warehouse space.
Exxon said it will present a “substantial contribution” today. No indication if this is a restatement of the previous announcement or something additional. The event is at Red Cross offices.
