The Little Rock Police Department said today that a woman found shot in the head on April 13 in Southwest Little Rock has been declared brain dead, and a man arrested for Domestic Battery in the first degree in connection with the shooting has seen his charges upgraded to first degree Murder.

Doctors declared Lemen Arana, 32, brain dead today. Her body is being kept on life support to facilitate the harvesting of her organs for transplant. Around 3 a.m. on April 13, police responding to a 911 call to 8485 Stanton Road, one block off Baseline, found a man named Juan Montalba, 25, standing in the middle of the road yelling. Montalba directed officers to a nearby parking lot, where they found Arana sitting in the passenger's seat of a car, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. After police interviewed Montalba, he was arrested and charged with battery. He is currently in the Pulaski County Regional Detention Center, where he is being held on $2.5 million bond.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this report, based on an email from the Little Rock Police Department which said Arana had died just before noon today, was in error. In fact, Arana was declared brain dead just before noon.
