Rest easy, people of Springdale: though the city's automated emergency system
sent out at least one text alert this week advising that a "Tsunami Watch/Warning"
had been issued for Springdale
, the text was in error.
40/29 TV reports
that during a system update, a line of code that normally filters alerts from the National Weather Service and sends out only those alerts for hazardous events scheduled to occur in Northwest Arkansas was turned off, resulting in those signed up for the text system receiving a warning related to the recent 8.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile.
The tsunami warning apparently went out to around 250 residents, undoubtedly leading some doomsday preppers in the area to rue the day they neglected to add a rubber raft and life jackets to their bug-out bag. The problem with the system had been fixed by Wednesday afternoon.
