BENNETT'S NEW HOME: At 608 Main.
, a downtown Little Rock mainstay since 1870,
has found a new home at 608 Main St.,
the former site of Phillips Men's Store
. Bennett's owner, Sheree Meyer,
who inherited the business from her father in 2003, signed the lease this week.
Bennett's will move in a couple of weeks from a home of more than 40 years at Third and Main in the Fulk Building. Bennett's is making way for redevelopment of that building and another her family owns across the street for use by Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods
, the ad and PR firm, and a related video production company.
Meyer said the Phillips space will be spruced up. It includes retail display windows, obscured in the photo above, that should make a good place for Bennett's military memorabilia, such as the vintage machine gun that many remember at Third and Main. "We hope to keep it as authentically Bennett's as we can," she said.
Bennett's has expanded from military surplus to gear for all types of outdoor pursuits. Meyer said she's excited about downtown development and the ability for the store to stay on Main Street. She takes some satisfaction that the long ago investment by her father, Joseph Kaufman
, in downtown property is now reaping rewards.
