All is well with Duck Dynasty at A&E

Nothing to see here any longer. Move along. From CNN:

Little more than a week after it suspended "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson for incendiary remarks about homosexuality, the cable channel A&E said Friday that it would include him in future tapings of the reality television show, effectively lifting the suspension amid a flurry of petitions in support of Robertson.

"After discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family," the channel said in a statement.

In an apparent gesture to the advocacy groups, A&E said that it would "also use this moment" to broadcast public service announcements "promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people."

Going to be very interesting to see which advocacy groups are rewarded in the coming PSAs. Mike Huckabee and Jerry Cox, among many others, have said the problem was intolerance toward people quoted as saying homosexuality is a sin and an offense on a par with bestiality, pedophilia and various felonies. Similar Duck Dynasty fans have stoutly defended Phil Robertson for claiming black people in Louisiana were a happy lot before the civil rights movement and welfare and "entitlements" made them resent the white man. He also had some fractured facts to offer about offenses perpetrated by other world religions not of his Christian persuasion. Perhaps some promos for the History Channel work on the Civil War and the South in the 1960s and comparative religion would suffice.

Make no mistake. The speed of A&E's reversal means you score this one for the Duckheads. Like Cracker Barrel's earlier capitulation. A&E went with the money. Does this inoculate the Robertson clan against future ignorant and cruel remarks? That's a slightly different question. Even Mike Huckabee ventured timidly that Robertson was a little off on his facts about black people not singing the blues until after welfare came along.
