BEEBE: The governor's office plans to fight the lawsuit.
Attorneys for Megan Tollett
,executive director of the Republican Party of Arkansas
, filed a lawsuit in Pulaski County today over a request for records under the Freedom of Information Act
. AP reports
The lawsuit says Tollett requested documents this year that the governor's office received from people seeking appointments to state boards or commissions.
But the lawsuit says the governor's office said the documents fall under an exemption from the public records law.
Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample says the governor's office plans to fight the lawsuit and has been in contact with the attorney general's office. DeCample declined to discuss the details of the case.
Presumably Beebe will claim the exemption from disclosure of "correspondence of the Governor."
UPDATE: As Blue Hog Report points out in comments, the likely exemption is in fact "working papers."
Also, don't miss Max's post
arguing that Beebe (like governors of both parties before him) is wrong on the merits here, and hoping that the courts take this up and set a precedent for more transparency on public records.
