Amid criticism of its low pay and large part-time workforce, Walmart made a PR move today with visits to selected stores to announce promotions to 25,000 employees among its 1.3-million workforce. They’ll get better jobs, more responsibility and higher pay. This follows a September announcement that store was moving 35,000 employees from part-time to full-time status and 35,000 from temp workers to part-time status. In all, about 7 percent of Walmart workers are getting improved status from the moves.
Walmart has been battling criticism over the numbers of its workers who make less than $25,000 a year. Walmart has disputed critics’ estimates, but has so far refused to provide full details.
