A news release just arrived from the John Burkhalter campaign. He's the North Little Rock businessman seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, so far without announced opposition.

Burkhalter said he was resigning from four boards on which he serves, including the powerful Arkansas Highway Commission, to focus on the race. The release in full:

Businessman and Arkansas Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter released the following statement today on his resignation from four boards to focus more time and energy on his campaign for Arkansas Lieutenant Governor. Burkhalter resigned the Pathfinder, Inc. Board of Directors, University of Arkansas Campaign Arkansas Steering Committee, Baptist Health Foundation Board of Trustees and the Arkansas Highway Commission.

“I have taken great pride in serving our State through public and community not-for-profit boards. However, I have resigned from four boards on which I have served proudly over recent years, so I can focus my attention on sharing my vision for creating jobs and growing Arkansas businesses through my campaign for Lieutenant Governor. As the future demands on my time grow, I want to make sure that these organizations and their important work continue to progress.” – John Burkhalter.

The Highway Commission is political enough without having a sitting commissioner enmeshed in a race. Gov. Mike Beebe appointed Burkhalter in 2011 to serve through 2017, completing an unexpired term of Cliff Hoofman, who resigned to take a court appointment. Beebe now will appoint another replacement.

Republican incumbent Lt. Gov. Mark Darr apparently isn't running again, having ditched a race for Congress amid an investigation of misuse of campaign and office money. Rep. Charlie Collins is running for the GOP seat and others are expected in that race.
