The latest in our video series collaboration with Greg Spradlin and Camp Friday Films is an interview with Bill Carter, the Rector native who’s semi-famous for being witness to a hell of a lot of history. Among his careers: secret service agent, a fixer for The Rolling Stones and an attorney who’s represented dozens of famous musicians.
We thought it fitting, on the 50-year anniversary of President Kennedy inaugurating the Greers Ferry Dam, to run this part of the interview, where Carter talks about handling some of the logistics of Kennedy’s visit, including dealing with Orval Faubus, who tells Carter in confidence that he’s a big fan of Kennedy’s. Plus, Carter talks about working for the Secret Service in the immediate wake of Kennedy’s assassination and why serving under Lyndon Johnson made up want to change careers.
Noted: Bill Clinton went to Greers Ferry Dam today to re-create JFK’s speech (a call for federal investment in infrastructure). Interesting that several Republican politicians — including Lt. Gov. Mark Darr and Sen. Missy Irvin — tweeted pictures from the event.
Go here and see JFK’s actual speech on the occasion, plus a wonderful photo of Kennedy with Mills, McClellan, Fulbright and Faubus. Giants walked the Arkansas earth.
