Something of a pleasant surprise:
The Republican attorney general of Texas has rejected an effort by the American Legislative Exchange Counci
l to declare itself exempt from open records law.
This means that the public can see communications between the corporate-funded lobby, which churns out cookie-cutter legislation for state assemblies, and legislators.
Here's the rundown.
The precedent, if ALEC doesn't succeed in defeating it in court, has implications everywhere ALEC works, including Arkansas
. There's an additional burden on sunshine in Arkansas, however, because of an FOI exemption granted legislative working papers.
