Go to the jump for details of a Metroplan study on beginning a scheduled express bus service between Conway and Little Rock or North Little Rock. (What? No Little Rock-Conway?)

It would need Wi-Fi, of course.

Metroplan is pleased to announce the launch of the Conway – Little Rock Express Bus Feasibility Study. Residents who travel between Conway and Little Rock are encouraged to participate in a short survey to determine the likelihood of support for implementing an express bus service in central Arkansas. Participants have until the end of October to respond to the survey that can be found on Metroplan.org or by visiting this link.

The study was initiated by officials in Faulkner County and Pulaski County who are interested in determining the feasibility of providing an express bus service between the cities of Conway, Little Rock, and North Little Rock. Unlike a traditional local bus service that has several stops along the route resulting in a longer travel time, an express bus service is characterized by limited pick-up and drop-off locations emphasizing faster trips.

Faulkner County Judge Allen Dodson said, “It is important to continually evaluate transportation infrastructure and options. I think there’s no question that a Conway-Little Rock express bus service will be viable at some point. This study will help us make more informed decisions regarding the timing of such viability. An express bus service would hopefully provide our people with a more affordable transportation alternative while easing congestion, reducing fuel usage, and reducing emissions.”

The results from the feasibility study will incorporate information from census data, commuting patterns, and survey responses. The study will be published by the end of 2013 and will inform municipalities on the potential ridership, operating costs, revenues, and other public benefits from an express bus service. Also included in the study results will be a service plan identifying the best use of transit routes.

Metroplan is the federally designated metropolitan planning organization for the four-county region of Faulkner, Lonoke, Pulaski and Saline counties. It is a voluntary association of local governments that has operated since 1955.
