The Wednesday night line is open. Final words:

JAY MOODY
  • JAY MOODY
* JAY MOODY SET FOR CONFIRMATION HEARING: Circuit Judge Jay Moody is set to go before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, Sept. 25, in its review of his nomination to a federal district judgeship for the Eastern District of Arkansas. That offers some indication that his nomination won't provoke controversy and could move quickly along. Some candidates for circuit judgeships in Little Rock will be watching closely, because his elevation to a federal judgeship would open another bench spot for candidates that otherwise might have to oppose each other for existing openings.

* NOTHING YET ON ROBBERY OF BEEBE STAFFER: I aim to please. Durango asked last night about progress by Little Rock police in unraveling conflicting stories in a recent carjacking of Lamar Davis, Gov. Mike Beebe's deputy chief of staff. Said Sgt. Cassandra Davis: "We are still investigating the robbery of the governor's staff member. Not enough information to issue warrants at this time."

* MORE EQUALITY FOR GAY COUPLES: The federal Labor Department has ruled that legally married same-sex couples are entitled to the same access to employment benefits as all other married employees, even if they have the misfortune to live in states that discriminate against them in marriage, such as Arkansas.

* ANIMAL TALES: A rogue possum causes a ruckus in the Little River courthouse in Ashdown.

* TEACHER HEALTH INSURANCE: Uh, yes, Gov. Beebe. Reduction in benefits is one way to cope with a workout of the enormous increase in cost of teachers health insurance. But equity among all public employees — state employees and teachers, heavily supported by state funding —  should also be high on the list.
