The Little Rock Port Authority broke ground Thursday on an "Arkansas River Resource Center" to house the Port Authority offices and offices of the port's shoreline railroad and the Arkansas Waterways Commission.

The $1.85 million project is funded by the authority and a federal Economic Development Administration grant. The 5,000-square-foot building will sit on 4.2 acres at the end of Industrial Harbor Drive on the banks of the river and take about 11 months to build. It will include conference roooms. Mayor Mark Stodola touted the port as "an incredible economic engine" for the city. It includes an industrial park, river terminals and a slackwater harbor, plus a foreign trade zone.
