Drew Hansen, who's written a book about the speech, has an op-ed in the New York Times about King's preparation for the speech and how encouragement from Mahalia Jackson prompted him to use the "dream" metaphor he had worked into earlier speeches on the civil rights trail, but never so eloquently and memorably.
