Add names to Jonesboro Senate race, lt. gov. contest

A reliable source says Valley View School Superintendent Radius Baker will be running for the state Senate seat created by Paul Bookout's resignation. He's a Democrat and, I'm told, supported by the Jonesboro mayor. One Republican, John Cooper of Jonesboro, is already in the race and a number of other names have been mentioned.

UPDATE: And here's a Democratic name being kicked around in Jonesboro circles — retired football coach Larry Lacewell, 76.

Farther down the election road, I see Rep. Andy Mayberry of Hensley, the anti-abortion crusader, will join the Republican primary race for lieutenant governor and his wife Julie Mayberry is prepared to attempt to keep the House seat in the family. Rep. Charlie Collins of Fayetteville was already in the GOP race. John Burkhalter, the Little Rock businessman and Highway commissioner, has declared as a Democrat.
