Augusta's Jimmy Rhodes, Jr.: magician, mortician, politician

SoLost, the Oxford American's award-winning video series, profiles a true Arkansas character in its latest episode — Jimmy Rhodes, Jr., the former mayor of Augusta. He was in his mid-20s when he was elected, which made him the youngest mayor in the state at the time (and possibly in history). He's a third generation mortician. He's a magician (make you sure you stick around through the credits for some magic). He's a collector of wrasslin' memorabilia. His dad had a pet mule who he'd drink beer with. You can see how this would make for an excellent six minute documentary profile.

As usual Dave Anderson directed the short, but big props to friend of the Times Gabe Gentry who shot a lot of the footage and brought Anderson the story. Gabe did our promo videos for the Mayflower project and digital membership launch.

UPDATE: The OA Facebook page reports that Rhodes and other SoLost subjects will be at a SoLost party at South on Main at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.
